The North region of Mie is made up of two cities, Kuwana and Inabe, and two towns, Toin and Asahi. From Kuwana station, taking either the JR or Kintetsu trains, you could be in Nagoya City in around 20-35 minutes. It’s also very easy to get to the Kansai region from Kuwana station.
“The North” has many great attractions that are accessible all year round and are fun to go to, and to explore, with friends. The most well known of these is the theme and water park “Nagashima Spalands” (ナガシマスパーランド), typically ranked as the third best theme park in Japan after Disneyland and USJ. Also located next to the park is the Jazz Dream outlet mall where you can fill your shopping fix. Next would be “Nabana no sato” (なばなの里), a botanical garden where you can see fireflies, seasonal flowers, cherry and plum blossoms, and the famous winter illumination. There are a few shopping malls, like the Aeon Malls (イオンモール) in Toin and Kuwana, a fair number of onsen and sento, bowling alleys and game arcades, like Asahi’s “Asobix” (アソビックス). There are a variety of restaurants, with new ones popping up all the time. Some of which offer an “all you can drink” (飲み放題) menu. Of course, you will be able to find some karaoke places to sing into the late hours of the night.
Kuwana City is famous for the ‘loudest festival in Japan’, known as the “Ishidori Festival”, held on the first weekend of August. There is also the fireworks festival on the Ibi River. “The North” is also famous for clams, yasunagamochi, Muramasa Samurai’s swords and 1000 paper cranes.

Hey everyone, Carlo here. I’ll be the RA this year for the North! I’m originally from Minnesota in the US, but I studied Global Studies at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, Nebraska! This year I’ll be going into my fourth year on JET as a Junior High School ALT in Kuwana.
When I’m not at school, I love exploring whenever I can (mostly for cafes, small restaurants, or nice places to sit and enjoy a Coolish), going to concerts, eating okonomiyaki, playing Dungeons and Dragons, or having a nice night in with some video games. I don’t go hiking or to the beach nearly as much as I would like, but I try to get out of the city when I can!
I’m a sucker for beer and sweets, so if either of those interest you I can definitely point you in a couple of good directions!.
If there’s any questions you might have about anything else, please send them my way! If I don’t personally know the answer, I will do my best to find someone who does!
